What labs study it for
Cell-growth research. Labs add it to cell cultures to support cell growth in the dish, and use it to study IGF-1 receptor signalling.
What this compound is
IGF-1 LR3 is an engineered analogue of insulin-like growth factor 1, a naturally occurring protein of 70 amino acids. The analogue carries a 13-residue extension at one end and a single substitution at position 3, changes that sharply reduce its binding to IGF-binding proteins. Laboratories use it as a cell-culture supplement and as a tool for studying IGF-1 receptor signalling with reduced binding-protein interference. It is not approved for any medical use.
IGF-1 LR3. Supplied lyophilized. Lot-specific HPLC and MS documentation accompanies each unit.

What growth hormone actually acts through, one step later.
Growth hormone does much of its work indirectly: it prompts the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor 1, a 70-amino-acid protein that carries the signal onward. In the body IGF-1 is held in check by binding proteins that switch it off. IGF-1 LR3 is an engineered version with a 13-residue extension and one substitution at position 3, changes that sharply reduce that binding. It sits downstream of the GHRH-analogue and ghrelin-receptor families rather than alongside them.
